A concussion is a brain injury caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. The impact causes a biochemical imbalance within the brain cells, resulting in decreased blood flow and temporary energy deficits within the brain. Concussions are a common injury, especially if you are an athlete. Road accidents are also a common cause of concussions. Symptoms of a concussion can be physical, cognitive, and emotional. They may include:

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Headache

  • Pressure in the head

  • Neck pain

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Dizziness

  • Balance problems

  • Difficulty learning & concentrating

  • Unexplained changes in your sleep cycle

  • Not feeling well-rested

  • Feeling irritated

These symptoms can range from mild to severe. It may not always be immediately apparent, so they are often left untreated.

The signs and symptoms of a concussion can vary significantly among individuals and may persist for a few days, weeks, months, or even longer in some instances. Nonetheless, most people usually experience relief within 7-10 days.

Suppose you or a family member faces any symptoms related to a concussion. In that case, we would encourage you to schedule an appointment with one of our qualified team members for a comprehensive concussion assessment in Surrey!

In conjunction with CCMI, we offer services and strategies for concussion tests and treatment in Langley, including:

  • Exertional testing for return-to-sport readiness and sub-symptom threshold exercise programs for persistent symptoms

  • Vestibular, oculomotor, and cervical spine rehabilitation

  • Balance, reaction time, visual processing, and neurocognitive testing (pre-season baseline and/or post-injury/return to sport testing)

  • Educational resources

A relative symptom-limited physical and cognitive rest is recommended during the early stage following injury. Research suggests 24 to 48 hours. However, these decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

Following a short rest period, the International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport (2016) recommends a gradual increase in mental and physical activity by a licensed healthcare practitioner trained in concussion management.

What Is A Concussion?

A concussion results from a sudden force applied to the head through direct impact, such as a blow or indirect force transmitted from the body. Remarkably, one need not necessarily strike the head to incur a concussion.

This force induces brain movement within the skull, instigating cellular-level changes in brain tissue that lead to swift neurological alterations. Thankfully, these changes typically resolve on their own. It is crucial to acknowledge that all concussions are classified as traumatic brain injuries, underscoring their significance.

At Clayton Heights Sports & Therapy Centre, we specialize in concussion chiropractic care and play a pivotal role. Whether the concussion stems from a direct head injury or an indirect force, we offer dedicated concussion chiro Surrey to recognize and address these traumatic brain injuries with the seriousness they deserve. Pre-season Testing

Pre-season Testing

Multimodal pre-season testing is a series of physical and cognitive tests that provides a pre-injury overview of healthy brain function. These tests can offer healthcare practitioners an objective benchmark to compare should a patient sustain a concussion. It’s important to remember that not all baseline testing is created equal. CCMI has selected the best evidence-based tools to provide comprehensive, multimodal, proven baseline testing.

As concussion symptoms often disappear days to weeks before the brain has recovered, having valuable baseline information may help practitioners make safer return-to-play decisions.
