Acupuncture

In acupuncture, solid, filiform acupuncture needles, ranging in size from 13-70 mm in length, are inserted into the skin at specific points. According to ancient Chinese medicine, this process of inserting needles is therapeutic, as it encourages healing, improves mood, increases energy, reduces or relieves pain, and improves function.

Acupuncture needles are left in place for 15-30 minutes, and patients often feel a dull, heavy, or achy feeling, which indicates that the needle is correctly placed. Our practitioner may manipulate the needles by lifting, twisting or rotating them in order to increase or decrease the flow of qi (“chee”)—life energy—through your body. This process is safe and virtually painless.

Some of the noted benefits of acupuncture include:

  • Drug-free pain relief

  • Effective treatment of both acute and chronic ailments, as well as treating both the underlying causes of diseases and the symptoms

  • Holistic treatment approach that links mind and emotions

  • Disease and illness prevention and well-being maintenance

The most common conditions that we treat with acupuncture are:

  • Addiction

  • Anxiety

  • Arthritis

  • Back pain

  • Digestive disorders

  • Emotional disorders

  • Fatigue

  • Fertility

  • Headaches

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Stress

  • Weight loss

Acupuncture is great therapy for chronic pain and sport-specific injuries, whether treatment is exclusively acupuncture or is combined with physiotherapy, massage, and/or active rehab.

Cupping

In cupping, a glass or plastic cup is used to create a vacuum on the skin (usually on the back or stomach; sometimes on the legs or arms), which produces localized pressure. In traditionally cupping, heat is used to create the vacuum, but in modern cupping, suction can be used to create the vacuum effect.

As the vacuum is created, the skin is pulled gently upward inside the glass. This opens up the skin’s pores, stimulating blood flow, balancing and realigning qi, breaking up any obstructions and helps draw toxins out of the body. All this combined helps promote overall healing. It is even used by some practitioners to treat depression.

During treatment, depending on the nature and severity of the condition being treated, our practitioner may place more than one cup at a time, and the cup or cups will be left in place for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. We sometimes apply medicated or herbal oils to the skin prior to cupping treatment. The oil helps the practitioner move the cups up and down your skin to particular acupoints or meridians without lifting them.

Cupping is commonly used to treat respiratory and other conditions, including:

  • Bronchitis

  • Asthma

  • Congestion

  • Arthritis

  • Gastrointestinal disorders

  • Pain
